On October 31, 2001, the Mountain Foothills Rotary club was chartered on two principles: serve the Evergreen community, and make sure its members have fun doing so. We're an evening club meeting at Mount Vernon Canyon Club — members gather in person or on Zoom each week before the 6:00 PM meeting to enjoy each other's company. The club has always kept dues low and made meals optional, so the cost of belonging is never the reason someone can't join.
What the work has added up to
The Andy Smith Sr. INSPIRE golf tournament and the Ice Melt contest have been the club's biggest fundraisers, and the results speak for the whole community:
INSPIRE gives people with special needs in the extended Evergreen area an array of events and experiences through Evergreen Park & Recreation. EChO helps mountain-area neighbors in difficult financial straits — a substantial food bank, counseling, and job readiness — with a focus on helping clients become self-sustaining.
The gift of mobility
The club has also embraced Crutches 4 Africa, the brainchild of David Talbot — a polio survivor himself. The program has shipped over 125,000 crutches, walkers and wheelchairs to polio survivors in Africa and beyond, and Mountain Foothills has been a significant contributor both financially and hands-on, preparing devices for shipment. Our members have been genuinely moved by what the gift of mobility means to its recipients.
